Before starting a new project, you should ALWAYS make a swatch. This is to check if the measurements of your final project will be the same as those of the pattern. Basically, this will prevent you from ending up with a hat that's too big or too small.
There are 3 aspects to consider when you create your sample:
1. The size of your crochet hook.
2. Your wool.
3. Your blood pressure.
We'll come back to that.
How do I make the sample?
The measurements and stitch used for the sample vary depending on the project. You must follow the instructions in the pattern, then measure.
For example: With a size I crochet hook and 2 strands of yarn held together: 12 sc x 12 rows = 4"
⚠ WARNING: you must make your sample larger than requested, and then you will measure the stitches inside.
Using a size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook and two strands of yarn held together, you need to make a square. The gauge here calls for 12 single crochet stitches and 12 rows. So we'll make a larger square: 15 single crochet stitches by 15 rows. Then, inside this square, we'll measure 12 single crochet stitches and 12 rows.
Scenario A: The sample measurements match those requested (4" wide and 4" high). You can begin your project!
Scenario B: The sample measurements do NOT match those requested. You must repeat the process to obtain the correct measurements.
How do you adjust a sample?
There are 3 options:
- Change the size of your crochet hook. This is the simplest method. If your swatch measurements are smaller than required (for example, 3.5" x 3.5"), redo it with a larger hook (6 mm). If your swatch measurements are larger than required (4.5" x 4.5"), use a smaller hook (5 mm).
- Change your yarn. It's possible that your gauge swatch measurements are inaccurate due to using a different type of yarn. If you're making Akroche Tatuk patterns, I highly recommend Red Heart Soft. A similar yarn is Caron Simply Soft (comparable weight, but a different texture). Avoid chunky, rough yarns like Red Heart Super Saver or Red Heart Comfort. Also avoid very fine yarns like Red Heart Fashion Soft.
- Adjusting your tension. This option is only possible if you have perfect control of your tension while crocheting, which is not the case for beginners. If your gauge swatch is too small, decrease your tension. If your gauge swatch is too large, increase your tension.
