Help! I want to learn to crochet.

À l’aide! Je veux apprendre le crochet.

Do you want to learn to crochet to make pretty things, but you don't know where to start? DON'T PANIC! I'll show you the way.

➡️ In-person classes

I always prefer learning in person with a professional. You can find classes in your municipality, your local farmers' group, or at yarn shops in your area. You can search on Google, or you can ask in the support group. Someone there will certainly be able to help you.

You can also learn from a friend or family member who knows how to crochet. However, it's worth noting that it's a somewhat difficult technique to teach since everyone has their own method, and it may not be the best or most suitable for your situation. If you choose this option, there's a good chance you'll need to refine your skills on your own.

When I talk about lessons, I don't mean something that should be very long. Often, 2 hours is enough to learn the basics.

➡️ Learn on your own

With YouTube, it's quite easy to learn to crochet on your own. There are hundreds of videos that explain the basic techniques very well. If you want to get started, here's what you need to learn, in this order:

1. Hold the crochet hook and the yarn
2. Chain stitch (or slip stitch)
3. Tight knit
4. Bride
5. Finish a project and weave in the threads.

You will then be able to make simple projects such as square washcloths, scarves, headbands… in short, anything square or rectangular. The idea is to practice crocheting and memorizing the basic stitches.

Afterwards, you can move on to more complex points or techniques;

1. Work in a circle.
2. Increase/decrease
3. Color change
4. Raised strap (front and back)

The main downside of self-study is that no one will be there to tell you if you're making a mistake. If you practice it for too long, it becomes difficult to break this bad habit. That's why I highly recommend in-person classes to learn the basics. Plus, you'll have a reliable source to answer your questions.

One shortcoming of YouTube is that few videos explain where to insert your hook and how to count stitches using the two techniques. (And this is super important!) I made one to help you since I wasn't satisfied with the explanations I found on YouTube. Here it is:

➡️ What equipment should I use?

To get started, you need three things:
1. A crochet hook (I recommend a 5 mm or 5.5 mm for beginners).
2. A size 4 yarn. I recommend cream-colored cotton because the yarn doesn't separate or fray. Plus, it's a small, inexpensive ball.
3. A yarn needle for weaving in the ends

➡️ Where to begin?

Once you've mastered squares and rectangles, you'll definitely want to try Akroche Tatuk patterns. Here are the projects I recommend for beginners, in this order:

1. The Nordik scarf
2. Boreal or Nunavut
3. Rustik Kit

Crocheting is a wonderful hobby. I highly encourage you to get started with a class in person or by learning on your own. Hours of fun await! Happy crocheting!
